Hi Shaun, very nice image. sharp , well exposed .but i think it would work better in landscape personally , the bird is a little too central and needs more space to the right.
Great detail Shaun but agree with Mark I think a landscape crop would have worked better as it would give more room on the right and also make the bird a little smaller in the frame. I know some will disagree as they like big in frame

I go with the landscape too Shaun. It means you will be able to get the bird over to the left a little which should balance better.
OK though
Cheers

Hi All, thanks for comments so far.
Have reposted landscape format shot, see what you mean and I have got to shoot bit smaller in frame, bad habit of mine being to big in frame, still work in progress, thanks for advice.

2nd a vast improvement. on the techs I'd have sacraficed a tadge in the ISO stakes and gone 400 for a D300.
Second is an improvement for me... there appears to be something going on in the processing, I can see artefacts around the bird and branch, plus the plumage has a slightly 'strange' look, difficult to describe... might be due to the ISO (do you shoot RAW?) and in camera NR combined with sharpening....

Lovely portrait and definitely improved by the landscape format. Yellow looks a we bit "red" to me for a blue it but that may be a regional or winter thing.

Hi All
Thanks for the comments, Phil always shoot in RAw so should be no NR or sharpening until procesing stage, soslightly puzzled by artifacts any advice - I sharpen last of all with 30% amount. 0.3% radius and 0 threshold and 4/5 passes - all toughts welcome
Is this a crop?
Have you tried to use any masking? ie for selectively applying NR to the bg.
Could you give a rough step by step of your processing.... You can send this by pm if you wish. The more detail you give the easier it may be to pinpoint what is happening here.
