I have been missing for a few weeks and finaly was able to make it out this weekend again. I have been hoping the Bald Eagle population in Colorado improves this year. Two years ago it was great, but last year, I couldn't find one anywhere. Hope this is a good sign. I spotted this Bald this morning near Roxborough.
Since I haven't been out for a few weeks, I forgot I took my tripod out of the car and didn't re-pack it, so I had to handhold this flight shot with my 500mm...suprised I didn't injure myself

Nice shots, especially considering that they were hand-held. I like the wing position and lighting in the second shot better. I've only gotten any eagle shots from Chatfield a few times over the past four years and never even seen one near Roxborough. My guess is that there are only maybe a couple of bald eagles that live around there.

Kurt - nice shots. Holding a 500mm is a chore. Good job!

Really like image #2. Thank goodness for IS. Saw two pair of Balds flying over SW Loveland today.

I want a 500mm!! These are great shots Kurt. A couple dust bunnies in the first one and one in the second shot but thats a minor nit.

I especially like your second shot. Great lighting on the head in both of them.
The 500mm saves you a lot of money. No need for a gym membership if you lug it around all day and handhold your shots.

Wonderful hand-held shots!
I've heard Cherry Creek Resvr is good for Bald Eagles, at least that was the case 2 winters ago.

Thanks for the comments everyone!
Don, I heard the same thing, but always had good luck at Chatfiled 2 winters ago. Stan, best place by far I have found to see Bald Eagles (sometimes hard to get a good shot at them though) is Barr Lake. Once the lake freezes, it kills a lot of the carp and the Bald Eagles sit out on the ice and eat them. 2 winters ago, I counted 35 in a single day.

Aren't there a some eagles at the Rocky Mtn Arsenal? At least that's what I heard although I haven't seen any.

Great shots Kurt. I always love Bald Eagles.
Stan can't believe you never see Eagles in CO. I see them all the time in the winter months driving to and from the airport on E-470.
I actually spend about 5 days at a dam in Maryland with the eagles over in Nov, just haven't got around processing them yet.

I had no idea they were down in Roxborough.
