Imbedded Profiles in posted images

From home, I am worked on a wide gamut NEC monitor. When NPN'ers post images WITHOUT an imbedded profile, I am seeing some wildly over-saturated colors. They are so far off, I cannot even comment on the image, since I have no idea what the colors are supposed to look like. On my work monitor, they look fine.

I know a few other people have noted the same thing.

Is it recommended that one imbed an sRGB profile when saving for web?

I recommend an embedded profile in every posted image. It makes a big difference when viewing on a color-aware system like Mac OS X where the browsers (Safari and Firefox) are color aware.

I also recommend retaining EXIF in posted images, especially the photographer's name and copyright notice. It won't keep creeps from high-jacking your image for their web site or blog, but it can help prove ownership when you report such misuse to their host.

Harley, this came up a little while back with similar issue of a person not embedding the recommended sRGB. In fact I think Jim weighed in on that comment and said to do exactly that, at least as I recall. I always do it so I did not think too much about it at the time.
Additionally, browsers do make a difference and Richards comment here I've seen and heard a few times in the past as well with regard to Firefox and Safari. Again, I use Firefox but I have other browsers and I can tell the difference when viewing various sites.

I agree with Harley. I am using a NEC wide-gamut monitor, as well, and have noticed the same.

At this stage of the game for some browsers and applications that use images but are not color profile aware, sRGB is the recommended profile to imbed.

Are you using Firefox, Harley? If so, search for Mark Stahlke on this post
and my comment below. It solved a similar issue for me.

Harley, there's an excellent run down of browsers and color management in this article. It may help to clarify some things.

I am running a Mac with Firefox. I made a change to my color management settings per Mark Stahlke's post. It is still a little bit off, but it is now much, much, much closer. I think it will still be beneficial if people imbedded profiles as recommended, but at least now the images are only at the pitcher's mound instead of left field.

Thanks for the responses!
