There will be a total lunar eclipse visible throughout North America on the 20th/21st of December. Start time is around 10:30 MST. Should make for some good viewing and photos.

Thanks for the heads up Bob

Oh, boy...it's a full moon that night, too!
Thanks a lot for the heads up, Bob. I've always wanted to try to blend together multiple exposures of the lunar eclipse from start to finish as it tracks along the sky. If I blow it, the next chance is twice in 2014.

Can we get a test environment to practice this so we don't blow it? I can't wait until 2014.

I've never done the multiple image thing, either. I have a place in mind, that if it works out right, will capture the eclipse as it tracks over Pikes Peak. Hopefully it won't be miserably cold (or cloudy)!

I can show ya how to shoot the moon! (_!_)

Here are some useful links, mostly from Fred Espanak's (Mr. Eclipse) site. Fred prepares NASA's eclipse publications and chases eclipses worldwide.

Thanks for the info...in addition tonight the Geminid meteor shower should be visible.

Looks like this may be a non-event around here...forecasts are all showing overcast/cloudy weather.
Posted by Todd Caudle on December 20, 2010 at 10:45 PM
Screw the forecast, what's the sky look like? I just got home and all I saw was lots of clear sky. If anyone is heading out to Garden of the Gods, look for me in the filthy Nissan Frontier that's missing a front plate and driver's side mirror.

Yup, things have cleared up quite a bit. I'll be either in the Garden or just above it on one of the turnouts on Rampart Range Rd. Look for the blue Jeep Liberty.

I'm contemplating red rocks or Morrison mountain.

Preliminary result from Santa Fe. Frankly I was just messing around, drinking beer and clicking the remote on the back steps. This web version looks much sharper than the actual file. But a good time was had! Time for bed.
