Hi All,

I've been considering picking up a 4x5 set up for a while now, and am very close to pulling the trigger. It's something that I have always been interested in, but I am to the point where I need to experince this. I've been doing a ton of reading, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any LF workshops where I can get some field experience.

Thanks!

Chris, if you do not mind a trip south Michael Gordon has an upcoming workshop at Joshua Tree NP area soon. If the trip is too far, you might contact a few of the Bay area folks here at CANP directly to see if they can supply some ideas.

If you don't want to drive down to LA for one of Michael's (he does private workshops as well as group workshops), try contacting Lon Overacker, active here and an ESS moderator. He occasionally does private workshops and he lives in the Bay area.

Christopher,

Definitely second Jeffrey's suggestion. A site packed full of information AND gobs of knowledgeable large format folks, including any and all who shoot LF here.

I would be happy to help out and thanks for the plug there Mr. Goldman. I wouldn't want to steer you away from our friend Mr. Gordon, but I would be happy to provide some hands on.

I can't see charging anyone to "see" a LF setup and talk shop for a couple hours. What I would suggest is such a session before you actually get some equipment to see if LF is something you would really be interested in. IF then you went ahead and purchased some equipment, we could do a private 1-day workshop that would include at least half the time in the field practicing and actually burning some film and the other half indoors talking about everything from developing resources, scanning, processing, etc. etc.

Feel free to contact me via the email link below. If anything perhaps we can chat on the phone to get started and see where you're at. Why the interest in LF, what your expectations might be, etc. etc.

Let me know!

Lon

Great offer from Lon. Nothing like seeing the camera and messing around a bit with it before taking the plunge. The cameras look really complicated, but are actually quite simple once you grasp a few very basic concepts.

Chris, feel free to throw out questions, etc here as well. There are a fair number of LF shooters who are active at CANP. We are all happy to help out.

All good and helpful information from Harley, Jeffrey, and Lon here, Chris. As I recall, Lon had just recently worked up a very nice document to assist a couple overseas ESS regulars who just entered the Large Format arena too. I also think it really does require hands on to see and feel what is taking place, but reading up and using support documents can go a very long way in learning the format overall. Good luck with your thoughts overall on how you approach this format.

Chris,

Hey I can help out as well. I live in San Jose, and I can spend an afternoon with you if you like. Just bring some sheet film and you can most certainly burn it in my camera. Drop me line via email if you are interested and we can work out a time.
