Hi everyone! I just found out that TOMORROW NIGHT there will be a lunar eclipse during a blue moon, during the winter solstice!! It marks the end of a 26,000 year cycle and its the first time in history it has happened!! Get out there and photograph it! It's visible in all of USA, not sure about other countries.. Granted that its clear out. 2:17AM Central is the peak, when the moon will turn crimson red. This video has some info on it...

I agree it's cool, but it's not the first time. According to NASA, there was a full lunar eclipse on the winter solstice as recently as December 21, 1638.

True, but was it also a blue moon?

Joe,
Blue Moon is the second full moon of the month and the lunar cycle is 28 days. So a blue moon isn't possible on the twenty first of the month. Sorry!

"With a full moon falling on same date as winter solstice tonight, North Americans will witness a total lunar eclipse, the likes of which hasn't been seen since before Salem witch trials in the 1600s."

An alternative definition of "blue moon" is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. This full moon doesn't qualify under that definition either. Never the less, a full moon and eclipse on the Winter Solstice is an special occasion. Let's hope the Mayan's weren't off by two years.

Can somebody huff and puff and blow the clouds out of Arizona? It'd be much appreciated.

Clouds blew into Juneau tonight, despite a forecast for crystal clear skies and cool temps. It was still cool to watch the shadow move across, but by the time the moon was fully eclipsed, all color and detail were masked by the clouds. Maybe next...
