The photo isn't good enough or appropriate for the Avian Gallery, but I thought my fellow bird nuts might enjoy it. This is a part (perhaps 20%) of the King Penguin Colony at Salisbury Plain on South Georgia Island. The number of penguins beggars the imagination - the naturalists on the ship said there could be 125,000 breeding pairs of King Penguins present; perhaps 300,000-350,000 birds.
The sights, noise and smells overwhelm the senses. The amounts of food required for this many birds - plus, the Southern Fur Seals and Elephant Seals present in thousands - speaks to the incredible richness of the Southern Ocean.
An altogether amazing place. If you ever have the opportunity to visit, take it.

What a sight Jim. And to multiply this number by 5, wow! Must have been an incredible experience.
