Does anyone else find the fact that on the new site, the reply/ comment panel comes at the top of the other comments, a little off putting.? On the old one you could read the comments and then add your own which seemed a natural sequence to me. Only a monor point but I am a luddite.

I agree with you there John - it does seem more natural to read others comments before posting your own.

i think the new system is a good idea personally, lets you form your own opinion rather than been influcenced by others comments..

I totally agree Mark, however
,its not a case of being influenced by others, but ones comments might also be in answer to those of others relating to the picture in question.I can think of numerous cases.
JohnR
I never even noticed. It'll soon seem like the norm and the old system will soon be forgotten.
If a reply is specifically directed towards a particular question/comment,etc. etc. then it's just a question of copying the relevant sentence and putting it between quotation marks to be displayed as a quote.
I think it's a better idea as it saves scrolling through lines and lines of other peoples comments in case you don't have the time or inclination to read all the other comments before leaving your own.

I agree with John. I was caught out the other day when I posted a reply without noticing the others which were off screen. I would have worded it differently if I had known!

I dont think its much of an issue !!! and further more this new size format is vastly better ,it means your images need to be spot on . Mine i know are not the best but previously i could get away with quite poor image quality!!!!!! well not any more guess i have to try harder hey
I still scroll through and read other peoples comments before leaving mine but I think it is probably to deter some people who just seem to just repeat the last comment on an image. Mind you they can still do that if they wish!
My minor gripe would be that you can now only post every two days as opposed to one which was one of the benefits of being a member
Posted by Oscar Dewhurst on December 21, 2010 at 5:20 PM
Maggie, I agree, do you know how often you can post in the other galleries? I think it is every 48 hours as well
Posted by John Robinson on December 21, 2010 at 7:43 PM
I am sure that this is the correct page to air ones views and opinions.
As per my original point. It seems quite simple to me. If you don;t read the other comments first then you could reply with something identical to other replies which in certain circumstances could appear to be just replicating comments or you could in some cases look plain stupid.
Simon I am not really concerned with the size thing as I keep mine small all the time as its a useful size for other forums too ,and this whole posting thing can get quite time consuming. In any case with my basic gear there is not much point in trying to display the pixels I haven't got !Size is not important to me. Most of the pictures I sell are not much bigger than those at 720 on here.
To go back to my original point - I find the positioning of the comments panel not as user friendly as before. Its not a case of being right or wrong or anything its just personal opinion.
I agree with Justin, it soon will be forgotten as we all get used to it. Secondly John, if you don't think comments are replicated, then you they are, one person almost replies verbatim on here. Lastly, I think the option of having two image sizes to post is great, as you can get a better feel of an image & quality and it ensures a certain quality, I wish it was mandatory, as anyone can make a 720px image look good.
Lets look forward on this Forum, not back, otherwise it will become rather stale and turn into a dinosaur.
I guess Julian we are being of the younger generation (well you are), where we tend to adapt & embrace change for the right right reasons and this is certainly a step in the right direction, as the previous one was more like a pair of old slippers, comfy, yet a little tired and faded.
I hope that more changes, albeit small, are forth coming over the next few months and that this Forum has now traded in it's old pair of nashers into a gleaming pearly white set, with more 'bite' for a better phrase, isn't it a critique Forum where we ALL learn?
As Julian said, LETS MOVE ON NOW, there is a New Year ahead of us all.

First of all we were asked for comments on the new set up and I gave mine.
Secondly -
Steve says
"I wish it was mandatory as anyone can make a 720 image look good "
That goes down well: smile:
Merry Christmas.

John, does it really matter that much?!?!? Is it such an earth-shattering change?!?!?!
Guess there's a bit of luddite in most of us - but in general such changes turn out for the better. We haven't changed much in UKNP since we first fired up back in 2003 and we need to start shining a light into a few corners and clearing a few cobwebs out, bit of spring cleaning and a new lick of paint to spruce the place up so to speak .
For what its' worth... the comments box was moved to the top of the page following consultations with the worldwide NPN community several years ago - it's that way to allow people to comment without being subtly influenced by other comments (so don't hold your breath for it changing back ). It is a critique forum after all - not just a showcase site. If people's comments are unknowingly replicated by others, then doesn't that say that those comments are mentioning something of note in the image?
Change isn't always comfortable for everyone, but you'll soon forget it was any other way.
Erm.. not sure where we asked for comments.... the change is a done deed

Of course it doesn't matter that much but then a lot of things don't, but its supposed to be a discussion forum. Its the same as when I raised the point about all the posting records dissappearing. Same comment -"Does it matter " It doesn't matter to those who hardly ever comment but it does to me. Its all relevant to someone..

I think having the comment box directly under the image you're critiquing can only be a good thing - surely it's better to be able to see the photo as you word your comment.
As an aside, I'm with those who say the larger post option is a big plus - as you know excessive cropping is my bête noire and the larger image I think will help deter people from posting heavily cropped images. In fact, I've stopped commenting on posts were there isn't a larger option as my suspisions are roused
I'm with you on that one Simon and from a positive point too, although I think 1200px is a bit big only from the POV of viewing it on a laptop and set my image to 1024px RIP based on projected size and feel it is more that adequate for viewing.

I have just again been photographing a Hawfinch at 47 feet distance with a Sigma 500mm lens with no means on this earth of getting any closer
I'd like you to tell me how I can present an image worth viewing without cropping!!!
This is getting ridiculous.
And to say that any 720pixel size pic looks good !
Its all beyond me and certainly not what I joined this forum for.

As a newcomer I do not have old box experience. I do find myself formulating an instant opinion before checking what other people have written and then posting. I can then avoid an exact duplication of a previous comment and also see if there something in addition to the picture on which I can comment.
Hells bells fellas (and ladies of course) ! I haven't worked out how to put a big one on here yet I can certainly see John's point of view as I always try to read others views when posted before me in order to try not to replicate comments and also for the rare occasion when I'm able to answer or comment on a query / comments previously aired. I agree that it is good to have the picture in view when giving critique and so for me it just means reading down the comments and then going back to the picture to add my own. Unfortunately John the world is changing faster than you or I can keep pace with. . . . I've no doubt we will catch up at some point John's point about this being a discussion forum is very relevant and I hope that a point raised for discussion by any member is treated as valid and is given the consideration it is due. Merry Christmas.

I pay my money and post what I think will interest members of the forum although it may not always be photographically perfect.
It will not deter from posting cropped images. as there is nothing in the regulations that dictate so.
Are all your pictures full frame ?
I doubt it. If it is true then I accept it and you are a photographer ogf great talent.

Thankyou for appreciating my great talent There's a bottle of whiskey in the post!
Whilst I am all up for feedback to what you like and don't, I am going to repeat what I wrote in Johns last post concerning the forums posting history.
On these issues simply email the us, there is no need to post them on the forum as we do read our email.
The reason I stated this, as any software programmer will tell you, software cannot be all things to all people; decisions taken on global basis dictate how other things have to happen and how they will behave; otherwise bespoking everything would make UKNP and NPN a mammoth task to program and subsequently configure. This is no different to many 'product' trades.
Now if you emailed us with you concerns, we could either say -
a) Nice idea, we will suggest that as an enhancement for the next minor update, or
b) H'mm, actually that is a Global feature and would need to change for the whole of NPN, so we need to take-a-view at the appropriate time then, if agreed, submit it for a major release, or
c) Sorry, it's not happening ... for whatever reason.
This way no unrealistic expectations are set, no hares are set running and a lot of time or hot air is avoided.
