Canon 500 mm f/4 IS vibration in cold weather

Hi, Just got back from Yellowstone and had some serious problems with the IS system in low and below zero temperatures. The image stabilization system began to cause a vibration, rendering the IS system useless. It seemed to occur in the single digit and slightly negative F temperatures. Has anyone had this type of issue? Wondering if it is a problem I have to live with or if it might be a fixable issue by Canon. Will be a little tough to duplicate the temperatures though. Any insight would be appreciated.

Christopher, I was just there this past week as well and didn't notice any similar problems with my 500. Definitely sounds like something Canon should look at.

However, a leg on my Gitzo CF tripod did crack and fall off.

I also had my 500 out in those temps in Yellowstone (though not for a very long time), and did not have any issues.

Just spoke to Canon and they say the lense isn't rated below 30 degrees F and I should put a protective cover on it. I see guys out there all day long without any sort of cover beyond the neoprene camo covers and I am assuming they aren't having issues, so I guess a trip to Canon is in order. Anyone have any suggestions as to what sort of cover I should be looking for?
Thanks,
Chris

Just an update, dropped off the lense at Canon for them to look it over. Spoke to someone that was also there getting repairs. He has the same lense and has had it in -30 degree weather in Yellowstone and has not had any problems. So we'll see what Canon says next week!

Hi Christopher,

I have used mine without issue at those temps a number of times. I don't understand the protective cover idea at all. No matter the cover the lens is going to reach those temps fairly quickly. (unless there is some kind of heated cover).

Good luck!
