I have been watching from the ether for quite a while and never posted anything. I resolved to try and get more images out there for critique this year so I figured I should at least say hello.

2nd reason for post. Not sure if the weather is going to cooperate for me, but I'm heading to Steamboat this weeked and am interested in getting out and getting some sunrise and sunset shots. Without giving away your secrets, any areas you'd recommend for a decent Sunrise and sunsets. I am thinking up on Rabbit Ears pass and would prefer not to snowshoe in more than 3 miles if possible. I'm decent with map and compass if it's off trail. One of the shots on my shot lists is a moon rising through Aspens, but I know its not the greatest part of the phase. Thanks in advance and I look forward to being a part of the forum. -Lance

Welcome out of hiding Lance! I really like your post. It has a nice, wide range of tonality and I like the "spotlighting" on the mountain just under the summit. I'm sure everyone wouldn't mind seeing this bigger - remember you can post up to 720 px on the largest side.

I seem to remember there are a few snowshoe trailheads, a few of them are pretty well-marked, right off the highway between Muddy and RE Passes that lead to varied views of the Rabbit Ears. Those on the Muddy Pass side would likely be good at sunrise. You might also try the Dumont Lake area which has some relatively good access to several different trails. Sunset would be your best bet there. Our Steamboat resident expert Rod Hanna may be able to chime in with a few more options.

Actually, this weekend the moon should be fairly cooperative for the shot you describe. Sunday's probably better than Saturday, and maybe Monday's ideal, but you'll likely be gone by then.

Thanks. Driving through the pass tonight was a little dicey but not too bad. Probably scout tomorrow afternoon for for Sunday or Monday. Not driving back til Tuesday morning and that will be predawn so Tuesday might be an op as well.

Forgot- I'll post a larger version when I get back home. Was going to post some of my old (think 2 years) to get some constructive feedback to try and improve.

FYI, any typos or random words are the fault of typing on the iPad. Actually just assume any mistakes I make going forward were the fault of the iPad.

Welcome to the forum, Lance! I can't help with that area as I am not familiar with it. Hmmm, maybe a place to visit.
Your shot looks fine. I think the bright areas look natural and don't seem to have any blown areas on my monitor. Your comp is good too with the mountain sandwiched between the dark portions top and bottom. Shoot and post often. These guys and gals around here will make you a better photog, I guarantee!
