After reading the OP article on 2nd curtain flash, I decided to try it out. I'm working in mid-town manhattan right now very close to times square. Although I'm not quite there on the technique, I found this pretty interesting and I think I'll continue to work to learn it.

I'm am a little confused by how the XT does 2nd curtain sync. It seems that it sends an initial flash when the shutter opens, followed by a second flash before the shutter closes. I was under the impression that it would only flash at the sync time before the shutter closed.

Anyways, here is a shot I tried with the technique.

Mel - doesn't the camera flash before the shutter opens to help prevent red eye?

At least that is what I remember. I remember using a friends and I actually saw the flash through the viewfinder - I thought is was very strange. Neil told me that it will flash 2 times once to prevent red eye and once for proper exposure.

You photo is kind of interesting - shows the activity of NYC.

I don't think it normally does a redeye preflash on Manual. I'll go back and check that red eye is turned off. It was bright enough in Times Square that it shouldn't have needed to preflash for focus either. I think you could tan under all the neon.

I definitely have to get some practice to use this technique properly, but I thought some of the outdoor images in the OP article were really interesting. It would be a cool way to get a picture with friends at the end of a day of hiking or biking.
