For those interested, The annual "Winter Wings" Eagle Festival is coming up Feb 19-21.

Klamath Falls has the largest population of wintering eagles in the lower 48, and almost 80% of all Pacific Flyway migratory birds stop over here.

That is great information Sandy. I had no idea this little gem existed.

Sandy,

Saw this note and couldn't help but chime in. Although I have never attended this particular gathering, I attended one of my first wildlife/eagle tours/workshops with Ron Sanford 21yrs ago in Feb of 1990. Went with some folks for the eagle and waterfowl experience. After only 2 years visiting the area for waterfowl, eagles, raptors, owls, tundra swan, snow geese, etc. (I used to do wildlife a little) I quickly came to realize the tremendous landscape opportunities.

The Tule Lake and Klammath areas that straddle the border between CA and OR on the surface are pretty darn boring.... rural with very few landscape features other than the backdrop of Shasta. But once one takes the time to really know the area for it's aesthetic beauty, I returned about 5 or 6 more times over the years because of subtle and hidden beauty and not the eagles.

Anyway, just great stuff in the whole area. I would recommend:
The Tule Lake Auto tour - great opportunities for owls and other wildlife along Sheepy ridge.
Captain Jack's Stronghold
Lava Beds
Petroglyphs
all along stateline highway.
oh, and the hoar frost if it's cold enough

Just lots of opportunities and typically great winter sunrises and sunsets.

Thanks Sandy too because this made me take a trip down memory lane. Check out some images I captured over the years from the area. I want to go back.

I've been twice in the last 6 yrs and it's really a neat event. Can be crowded, though, so get motel reservations early, if possible. Not sure if I can go with responsibility for my ill mother, but I may be able to. anyone wanting to meet up, please email me..
