I did a search for how to get the avatar small enough. The answer seems to be "save for the web". I am not finding such an option anywhere in the process. Where is it?

In PhotoShop, you can "save for web" under File > Save for Web & Devices.. When the window appears you probably want to select Jpeg and then adjust the quality to your liking (I default to 60, though I only really use this for avatars and other basic images). This should greatly reduce your file size for a jpeg.

No wonder I couldn't find it. Can I do this from lightroom 3?

In LR3 you would go into File>Export. On the left of the box that will open you will see a drop down menu that says "Lightroom Presets". There are some presets to export for E-Mail etc. You can set the image size, export location, file naming, file settings such as quality, output sharpening, metadata, watermarking, and post-processing. After you have set everything for the first image you can save all the export adjustments as a Preset by selecting "Add" at the bottom of the left box.

Note that you may need to save without any metadata. For some images, the metadata alone is larger than the allowed file size, and won't be affected by the JPG compression you choose.

Thanks folks. It's there. Seems a bit insignificant. I'll probably tweak it.

Robert, if you have any trouble updating the avatar on the Preferences screen, let me know!
