With a band of clouds passing overhead Saturday afternoon, I made a quick trip to Sedona hoping to catch a sunset. The cloud bank to the west only allowed the sun to peak through for a minute before sunset arrived (first photo of Cathedral Rock), but the clouds did light up very red to the west behind me at sunset with some pink to the east and a redder cast to the ground (second photo). Unfortunately, those clouds over Cathedral Rock remained gray at sunset.

Oh man, what clouds! I think you lucked out with the clouds right over Cathedral Rock not picking up the intense color. Makes the formation stand out better than if it was all awash in reds and oranges.
Both are beautiful. But, I agree with Todd that the white clouds and blue sky set off the reds and greens quite well. Excellent work!

Nice contrast between the sky and rock. Nice balance.

Sweet, sweet light and scenery! Excellent 'development', too.
Right time, right place...congratulations, Doug!

Todd and Morris- I agree that the white clouds and blue sky compliment the red rock better. Am thinking about taking a third off the bottom rock to lighten the load down there.
Ken and John- Thanks for the kind words.

Doug, wonderful captures. The light and the colors are well balanced. I like the foreground as your entry point and the definition of the place. On our first trip to AZ, many moons ago, we stopped alongside the road to snap photos of these rock formations.

Great images, I agree with Todd, the first one is exceptional in part because there is more of a contrast between the sky and the butte. I also like the more distinct layering as you go back into the image on #1.

Good stuff, Doug! Personally, i might crop a bit of the fist fg layer (the bare rock).

Here's a vote for #1. The sky compliments the rocks really nicely. I do agree that a FG crop would help.
