This month marks our 6th anniversary of being online - kudos to our staff, moderators and most of all, our members for making NPN such great place to share in the joy of nature photography!
Spring is always a wonderful time of the year as our North American landscape turns green and full of life again. It seemed only fitting that this month's cover photo by Ronnie Gaubert celebrate the return of spring and all of the photo opportunities that come along with it. Many thanks to Ronnie for allowing us to use this incredible photo!
What's inside...
The April '06 edition starts off with a short Publisher's Commentary that I composed to express my sincere gratitude to our contributing editors, forum moderators and all NPN members, whose collective passion, skill and dedication have made NPN the success it has become. My sincere thanks to all of you!
Niall Benvie offers some insight on light and backgrounds in his article Background Attraction. This article should be of particular interest to macro and flora photography enthusiasts.
Guy Tal serves up another installment in his "Essential Landscape" series, Landscape Photography and the Art of Slogging. Carrying backpack full of photo gear and supplies out into the wilderness requires strength, stamina and dedication. But as Guy points out in this article, it's really all part of the experience.
This month we are very pleased to introduce a new contributing editor, Dylan McBurney. A nature photographer residing in northern Ireland, Dylan will be sharing his knowledge of Ireland and photography with us, starting with this month's article Relics of Memory on an Irish Peninsula. Welcome aboard Dylan!
NPN contributing editor Paul W. Faust chimes in with an article on composition entitled Compositional Exercise. For those looking for tips on how to become better "composers" this one is a must-read!
Finally, NPN member Kent Newton offers some great tips on photo manipulation in his article Beyond Orton – Exploring the Boundaries. Those who have experimented with the Orton technique will want to be sure to check out Kent's article!
We hope you enjoy this latest edition of Nature Photographers Online Magazine. Thanks again for your participation and being a part of it all!
Jim,
I haven't had a chance to sit down and read through everything yet but just glancing through a full issue is always enjoyable. I wanted to be the first to thank you for 6 years of dedicated service. You have helped lead NPN to be one of the premier Nature Photography sites on the net. I know I am personally indebted to NPN for the education and opportunities over the past 5 years that have gotten me where I am today. So thank you for making NPN what it is today.
Jim, as you may know I have been with NPN for most of those 6 years . I often wonder how you and Donna manage to maintain NPN the way you do and still have time for other things.
The images throughout the various galleries are always a pleasure to view. Comments given and received make them even more enjoyable. But NPN is more than just about the images we see posted there.
What is the most outstanding in the NPN community is the many members who are willing to offer their talents and expertise to help others. They are very helpful, and very encouraging; my sincere thanks to all of them.
Congratulations on your 6th year. I just wanted to thank you for all that you do to keep NPN going. It is a great place to communicate with other photographers from all over the world. NPN has enriched my life in many ways.
Thanks to all for your kind words! Donna and I very much enjoy doing this - it is truly a "labor of love." We too look forward to many more years of being a part of this wonderful group of people and doing our best to make sure you feel the same!

Exactly my feelings! Thanks Jim and all others who make NPN what it is.
