This is a shot I have been wanting to do for a while now. This was my first of many mornings over the next few months that I plan to work on this composition - so what you see here is the rough draft of the final crop I hope to refine. So please - let me know your thoughts on how best to crop and improve this.
It is obvious to me that early morning is the best time for this, as the sun rose directly behind me. The remnants of fog still linger in the sky. In case you wonder, the branches are far enough over the creek to be unreachable. Additionally, there is no way to trim or alter these - and this view represents the only real clear view of both the old mill and the stream. As the leaves begin to fill in, the great detail on the building will be harder and harder to see. Still, I really like the opening here, and perhaps it will give a small glimpse on what lies beyond the trees.
By the way, I missed my one day opportunity last fall to make this shot, and with the turning leaves that day it was quite stunning.
Thanks for helping me out with this. The link leads you to a large version to scrutinize.
Ned,
This will be nice in the right conditions...
For those who dont know, this old Mill is a staple of the area we work in (very small, but close community)
Great framing with the trees. I want one more down in the right corner to finish the balance. This will be an incredible shot with some fall color and the right light.
I know this mill, beautiful in the autumn colors. I have thought about this area many times. Never seem to get out that way though.
Of course, you know, I like B&W, especially to make the water a deep black color. Other than that, maybe crop off the bottom? I'm not sure still, but an 8 x 10 crop would leave the branches but lose the empty dark at the bottom.
Just thinkin' out loud. I could shoot ya an email of what I'm talking about.

I think I should have worded that "how would you crop this?" and see what opinions I get to compare with my own thoughts....

I agree wholeheartedly with what John said above. I like photos that convey a mood. Only the photographer can take an image and make it their own.
I sent ya a version of what I might consider.
