Last weekend I had some friends over and I was showing them prints from my coastline series when one of them asked me if I was offering these prints for sale. I said that I do (both from my web-site and through a local art gallery), however, this person was interested in knowing if I offered the entire portfolio of coastal photographs as a set. The idea caught my attention but although I have been working on a few different photographic projects (one of them, Revisting California's Coastline is currently on display in the Photo Series Forum) I have never attempted anything like this. I must admit that if I do pursue this route I will be interested only in original prints, not a book, a calendar or post-cards. I know there are lots of you here who sell prints of your photographs. Do you feel that this is a viable idea? Any pros/cons? Any recommendations for me? I was thinking of perhaps offering a portfolio box of matted prints or a loose-leafed portfolio ablum containing the prints.
Click on any of the (details) links below the folio name to get an idea what was offered, etc.
They no longer offer the folios (they were working with a wet darkroom and things began to get too expensive I believe), but I think they're along the lines of what you were thinking of.
Guy, Yossef and Alex: Thanks for the pointers. The key to the success of such an offering will be to keep the price low. Unlike Michael R. I cannot offer a portfolio of my prints for ~$1000. The price will have to be much (much) lower. I will continue to research this more and hopefully can pull something together.
I have to disagree with your pricing scheme. Now you dont have to charge what MR charges, but lower the price to much and I think you will lessens their value.

I was going to suggest exactly where Guy pointed you. I have been toying with that idea for quite some time myself.
Still looking for additional opinions.
