Hi,
I have a few days off starting Wed. February 9 and have always wanted to photograph the Eagles and other wildlife in Northern CA. I plan on taking a kayak to the Upper Klamath NWR canoe trail and have information on Tule Lake and other NWR areas.
Does anyone have suggestions for any off-the-beaten-path (off-the -paddled-path) viewing areas? I am not afraid to hike a few miles and will have overnight gear as well as snow shoes if needed.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Paul,
I can't give you any specific recommendations for that area, as I haven't been there. But I suggest calling the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Tulelake, CA. Ask to speak with one of the biologists and they can probably make some suggestions for good photo sites as well as have up to date info on what's there and anything unusual. Their phone number is 530-667-2231. Good luck and post some of your images when you get back.

I don't think there are special hidey-holes where the eagles hang out. The public lands available to explore aren't that extensive. It's all ag land. I've seen an eagle here and there in the Tule Lake area but have never been to the part of the refuge in Oregon where the eagles are supposed to roost en masse. Definitely drop by the refuge HQ at Tule Lake for the latest tips.

John and Peter, Thanks for your replies. I just reserved a blind for Saturday and Sunday Mornings . Friday I will check out the Eagle Fly out at Bear Valley NWR and try the canoe trail at upper Klamath. I will give you a report when I get back.
Paul - when I was there last year in December the lakes were completely frozen over, so you might not be able to get very far with your canoe/kayak! I visited the fly out as well, and while we saw a lot of eagles, it didn't seem like a great place to actually get photographs (they tended to be pretty far away). I'd love to hear some more of your experiences there when you get back!
