Hi guys a freind of mine is after upgrading his camera from a point and shoot to a canon dslr with a budget around £600 to £700 max.
He is only taking pictures of his kids but very keen in macro, he has looked at the 50d or a good secondhand 5d any advice would be welcome.
My choice here would be the 50D, particularly if he is interested in close up photography, the crop is always usefull when trying to get closer and to give the subject the same percentage of the frame your working distance will be a little greater... plus you have live view which the original 5D doesn't...

I would agree with Phil since I assume your friend wants to use a standard macro lens with a magnification range up to 1x.
I use a 5D with my MPE-65 where the full frame comes in handy to accommodate larger insects given the rather extreme 1-5x magnification range. On a cropped sensor I'm struggling to fit anything larger than a bumble into frame even at 1x. But for a standard macro lens the crop factor of the 50D would be useful.

Hi Dale
Been away in Tanzania so forgive the delayed reply. Has he considered a G10, 11 or 12? He would need to spend a lot of money to improve on the portraits and macro the I take with my G10. I have all the top Canon bodies, lenses and speedlights but my G10 nails it every time without my having to put an ounce of thought into it other than composition. And when I fasten my 580 speedlight to it well, its amazing!
Bob
Ps, If he desires an SLR he should save for the 5dMkII or get a 40d which, having used both in the past I think is better than the 50d
