Made my annual trek to Rifle to get my ice fix the other day.
Ive shot every conceivable angle in the two main ice caves in the mountain park, so this time i decided to focus on some of the frozen falls. This is taken from 'Stone Free', one of the more popular ice climbing spots. The light is from the quarter moon off to the right, light reflected from the opposing cliffs. Orion nebulae is just left of center. I posted a comp of the entire falls on Landscape/ESS.

4) Needed clear skies for the night shots, which limited me for sunrise, so i decided to hit mcclure pass.

5) Aspen at the pass

6) Always wanted to hit hanging lakes in Winter--now i can cross it off my list!

7) I think i like hanging lakes better in winter...

8) A more intimate look at the hanging lakes falls. Heres a free tip to a super ambitious landscape photographer: it would be ultra cool to wade out into those icicles with a dry suit and shoot from the base of the falls
Thats all for now!

Every one of these is a killer shot, Stan! What a productive trip.

7, 5 & 2 from this nice set, with a heavy preference to 7. Would you consider a crop off the bottom of 7 right above the line across the bottom snow?
Posted by Stan Rose on February 13, 2011 at 12:31 PM
Thanks for the input, Doug. Yeah, i could crop it--i only kept it cause in the color the color differences up front were worthwhile, but in the B&W it probably makes sense to crop...

Really nice series, Stan. I really like 2, 3, and 7. I'm with Doug on the crop on 7. You've really given me some ideas with these images. BTW, the one on the Landscape forum is my favorite of the bunch.

Very nice, Stan. The one you posted in the Landscape is over the top for me! When I first looked at the 1st one here, I was scrolling down hoping to see something with the whole falls. Then I went over the Landscape forum and there is was. A real Beauty!

Sweet photos Stan! I was at the ice caves yesterday and watched as climbers went up the narrow sheet of ice with lots of overhanging pieces above them. Crazy to climb an ice sheet...maybe...crazy to climb in the current conditions...YES!
I really like all the photos, esp. #5 and the play of lines, shadows and textures.
Good trip!

Your best ice shot is in the 'Landscape' gallery, natch.
What really stands out to me are the b&w images. You've got a real good eye for what makes a successful b&w image. Doug's idea for a crop was a good one, and I might add that cropping #6 equally on both sides would help highlight the ice falls better while keeping the better part of that rock wall and trees.

John--lol, to be totally honest i wasnt too sure about my Landscape offering, i was gonna post it here first to see if anyone liked it, but i didnt want to post it twice so i figured id risk the snub on ESS
Originally the comp i had in mind was for a different waterfall--but then it fell down (literally) and i had to change my plans--so that wasnt the shot i envisioned (which would have been a lot cooler!)
Ironically, my best shot of the trip came at the tale end of my shoot when i stopped at GOG on the way home--maybe ill post that here next...

All are excellent shots with good comps and exposures in tough shooting conditions. I think my favorites are the Hanging Lake shots. Such a great idea to shoot it in winter. I also really like the star/waterfall shot. A very productive trip indeed!

#2 caught my eye the most. What nice color! #6 and #7 are both effective B&W images to say the least. I think #5 could be great too with just a bit of the top cropped off, especially the dark upper left corner. Looks like you had a nice trip indeed.

Nice series Stan, if you keep leaving the dunes and start shooting everything else there will be nothing left for the rest of us.

Fantastic!! Love the stars in the first image. Nice blue color in the ice in the second image. Great work!
