I was thinking of photographing the cranes in March. I know they have the crane festival the weekend of March 11th. I want to go either the weekend before or after to avoid some of the crowds, and I know the weekend after I will have more light due to the time change.
Just wondering when the most activity occurs and some of the hot spots within the refuge.
Thanks for any help!

Dan, I went down for the first time last year and I checked the crane fest site before I went. I was pleased with how accurate the behavioral descriptions were. Those birds do things like clockwork. You'd think they've been doing it for centuries or something!
A few have already been seen flying over the San Luis Valley. They'll be there through most of March and the weekend after the festival will be a great time to go. I'm teaching with Michael Forsberg, photographer and author of "On Ancient Wings" from the 23rd-27th at Zapata Ranch. We still expect to have good numbers of cranes to photograph.

Dan, Either time will do. Used to go down quite a bit but haven't been in a couple of years.
Check around for Owls. I've found GH Owls on several trips. Have a great time.

I'll put this in my bucket list for the future. It sounds great.
