Cranes in Monte Vista

I was thinking of photographing the cranes in Monte Vista, CO this March. I know they have the crane festival the weekend of March 11th. I was thinking of going either the weekend before or after, so as to avoid some of the crowds.

As for activity of the cranes, are they more active early in March, or later? Or, is that a mute point? Also, any hotspots within the refuge to watch out for?
