I am planning a road trip (by camper - my first trip in Norway) with my girlfriend in Center and Western Norway from 17 to 25 October 2011. So, I call to any Norwegian who could help me.
Here is the Google map of my scheduled road trip (it's not the definitive itinerary, just a first draft):
http://maps.google.fr/maps/ms?hl=fr&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=200342738121402694035.00049ad37a3997dcc6321&z=7
Of course, photography is our primary objective, as well as having the best overview of Norway in 9 days (with the minimum amount of kilometers to not hurry up).
Right now, our "prioritary" destinations are:
- Rondane and Dovrefjell parks (not really for Musk oxen, but for any animals we could see and landscapes),
- an overview fo the coast (Alesund, with perhaps a deviation to Runde island to look at puffins - I forgot Atlantic road because it is too far),
- an overview of fjords (first of all Geirangerfjord, perhaps Naeroyfjord and Aurlandsfjord),
- Jotunheimen park by Sognefjell road (seems to be still open at this period),
- Jostedalsbreen park by Nigardsbreen (to have an easy access to an important glacier)
- Hardangervidda park (for reindeers and Voringsfossen).
The problem is that I fear we try to many objectives for 9 days.
So if you can recommand/advise/dissuade me for any objective or new "must-see" places, that would be great
Thank you very much for any comment.
David
PS: I "request" help from Norwegian people, but any person knowing Norway who could help me is welcome of course
Hello David.
I think that you have done a very good job with your road trip planning for Norway. I guess that you know that October is not always a nice weather month here in Norway. In the mountains area there are sometimes snow already. At the western coast of Norway, the weather often are rainy and windy in October.
But I think it is a great time of the year, with cold clear air and beutiful light. I agree with you that the Atlantic road is a great place (I live near that road).
When you reach Alesund and are turning south, its possible to take the road E39 out of the city and follow that road to Ørsta. There you can take road 655 to Hellesylt, and a ferry to Geiranger. If you do that, you will drive a very narrow and most beautiful valley (Nordangsdalen). And the ferry trip from Hellesylt to Geiranger is also great.
Runde is a graet Island for birding. I think that the puffins are hard to find at this time of the year. I allways go to Runde between May and August, I do that once or twice a year.
You can really look forward to the glacier of Nigardsbreen at Jostedalen, its really beatiful.
As I said: You hav picked a lot of very good sites of Norway.
Please excuse my english, but you are very welcome to contact me if you like.
You can find photos on my site from many of your planned places: www.bettens.no
Thank you for your answer and advices.
I was aware of the weather on this period. But I really like this month and first snowfalls, and also it's the only period my girlfriend and myself can go in holidays together.
For the ferry trip from Hellesylt to Geiranger, I first scheduled it, but it seems to close on October, 15th... We will be there few days later... I'm very sad about that because it would have been a masterpiece of our trip.
I will have a look on your website for your picture, thanks for this.
I could have more questions about your country in coming weeks. I will contcat you for sure
