Picked out a spot using TPE to catch the moon rising above Sedona last night. I was hoping for some earth shadow to go with the clouds, but hey, ya can't always have it all.
Still wondering why the sky/clouds right around the moon come out darker.
Hope the blown out moon is not too bothersome. At -2E, it was still blown. I did not spot meter the moon in a separate image to superimpose it.
Neat shot, Doug, well conceived and executed. I love the soft glow of the cliffs contrasted with the blue clouds, and the placement of the moon is awesome. Though I definitely like it blown moon and all, I have to say I think it would be better with some detail in there. I could also see cropping away most of the blue sky above the clouds, my eye seems to get a little stuck up there.

Great job on using TPE to plan this out, Doug. I love that program. For me, the lack of detail in the moon is a deal breaker. The rest of the photo is quite nice, but I just can't get past the big white spot. It's certainly worth trying this again, or if you're not against cloning, just replacing the moon.

Beautiful scene, but I'm afraid that the blown out moon is also a deal breaker for me, Doug.
And yes, great job of using TPE to find this placement!

Cool--i dont mind the bright moon at all--thats the way the full moon pretty much looks to me...
Id try to even out that dark halo tho. Nice shot!

Thanks for the comments and crop suggestion. Somehow the bright light of the moon must be affecting the sensor in the area right around it to form a dark halo. Next time I will need to also get an image exposed just for the moon to clone.

It's a shame about the moon but it's otherwise a terrific image beautifully composed.

I also wish for detail in the moon Doug, but love the comp on this! Maybe you can give this one another go next month and take a second image? I would love to see it with a detailed moon.
