I was hauling my gear up some single track just outside of town this evening, intending to climb a nearby ridge and see what the sunset provided, when I was stopped in my tracks by a flash of purple/blue...

This is a heavy crop from the original (about 45% of the full frame). I wish I had noticed the OOF stick in the background at the time of shooting, but I suppose there's always tomorrow.

Calypso Orchid (Fairy Orchid)
Calypso bulbosa
Shot with a D200, 60mm Macro lens @ f4.5, 1/3 of a second
Gitzo CFR tripod, Kirk BH-3

The sunset never did amount to much.

Hi Craig and welcome! I'm thinking this is your first post here and what a winner it is!! The diagonal stick really isn't that bad but I hear what yer sayin and yes, there's always tomorrow!!

What's caught my eye is the fact that it is blue... I've only see Calypso Orchid's that were pink.

Looking at if from another monitor... it certainly looked very blue. I suspect a color space/white balance issue, I remember the blooms being a purple/pink color. I've had other orchids go very blue with nikon DSLR's before, I suspect there's infrared at play here as well.

Edit...
Yep, that was a version I had been playing with, had too much saturation and other funkiness going on. Mea culpa, I uploaded the wrong file. Now corrected to a much less Disneyesque rendition.

Craig,
Welcome to the forum. Nice first post. I didn't see the first one so I can't compare them. what I do know is this is a real sweet image with a nice bokeh. I'm looking forward to seeing more. :wavey:

Thanks John, that IS the less technicolor version... I changed the file on my web server. The other one was really, really blue
