In Yellowstone last week this fox traveled the length of the Lamar Valley in search of something to eat. Lacking a really long lens this is tightly cropped. Canon 1D Mk II N, Sigma 100-300 f/4 + 1.4x TC.

Love it! What a great composition, the oof snow really isolates the fox dramatically. Despite the tight crop on, it looks awfully sharp. You might want to do a wider crop which I think will work equally well, unless there are other objects that would negatively impact it.

Thanks for the comments Don. There is a lot of OOF foreground snow as well as some OOF trees and rocks in the background. I didn't think it had the same impact that this crop has but I'll play with it some more. I'm also amazed at the IQ that the old 8.2 MP 1D Mk II N produces too.

Excellent portrait! I like the OOF foreground coupled with the OOF background...way cool.
You might consider losing the touch of blue in the upper left corner.

Nice eye contact and color! Also like the OOF white in the foreground.

Steve, hard to believe this is such a large crop. Techs look great to me and the exposure looks excellent! I am jealous....the red fox I knew about around here has vanished and I don't have a single image of one in the snow. I like your comp a lot here.
