Yes, it has the usual give us licensing rights nonsense, but the prizes are quite good.

Actually Dave, I think it has much better terms than most contests (as befits such a well regarded contest). They can only use the image in relation to the competition, and only for 5 years. In addition :

"In some of the above circumstances, commercial opportunities may exist for winning photographers to benefit from the use of their image: where a commercial benefit is likely to arise, permission will be sought in advance and terms and conditions will be agreed."

That's much better than contests which just take the entire copyright forever just for entering.

It is one of the better contests I have seen which is why I did post it. While it may help some get recognition, the hard fact remains merely by entering they do get to use your work for free should you not win a prize. By giving them licensing rights it may effect resale value to other clients. There is a "created hereafter" clause which gives grounds for concern.

It may help the aspiring photographer get established, but is it of any benefit to an established person?

The "hereafter created" part is :

Inclusion within interactive elements associated with the Competition and or Exhibition (now known or hereafter created) available for viewing or download from the Owners’ website.

That's just referring to parts of the competition or exhibition of prints; The word "download" seems more troubling to me, since it doesn't specify form, format, or size. It's probably just a CYA for putting things on the web that others could save, but I'm no lawyer.

And I do agree that it would be nice if they'd only take some rights from winners, and not just for entering. I wonder if they do use non-winners to, perhaps, show the potential pool they picked from or something?

In 2009 they had a mural with tiny thumbnails of every image submitted at the entrance of the exhibit, to give you an idea of the size of the competition (40,000 images I think it was).

Last year they claimed over 90,000 entries I believe. It's definitely a prestigious competition... one that some of our members have done very well in previously. Here's hoping we'll see more NPNers pop up in the winners' gallery this year.

PS - Floris, welcome to Seattle.
