I do photo critiques 3 or 4 times weekly as a photo professor. The important aspects are first discuss at an appropriate technical and artistic level and secondly discuss base on the subject structure, did you fulfill the assignment.

Hi Jim,
I went through the "blog". Very interesting subject with many excellent comments and suggestions. I agree that simple comment like "excellent", "marvelous", "superb" are not of big use. But the quality of many images posted in NPN galleries is "excellent", "marvelous" or "superb". Such images make it difficult to comment because the quality is just "excellent" and there is not space for additional comment(s). If I view such images I'm not sure if shall just praise it or just view it without leaving a comment. I believe we must be flexible. More important is viewing and commenting images which are not of the best quality. We should not be shy to use negative comments with advice how to improve such image. We should be frightened to hurt the photographer. We can improve if we are ready to accept negative comments and try to follow the suggestions for improvement. .
