I need information on the use of a drop-in polarizer filter for a Canon 500mm lens. Is the expense worth the investment? Use for birding and wildlife work.

IMHO, Jay, with your interest, the polarizer will help in situations like cutting down leaf glare and on water shots. This of course varies with your position in relation to the sun. My stays on all the time.

Personally I see little use for a polarizer for avian photography, although I used to use one occasionally for scenics. Since I do most of my bird work very early or very late in the day when the light is lower contrast I can't imagine paying the penalty from the light loss.

The darn things cost around $250 . I have one and rarely use it.
As Rich says, the light cost is very high, and you usually want to avoid shooting at the times you will "need" it.
I bet you can find other uses for the money.
