I finally retired my Dell 4550, which served well but was really underpowered with only a single 2 GHZ Pentium 4 processor and 1 GIG of RAM.

The new PC is a speed-demon beauty from Puget Systems;

- Asus Rampage III motherboard
- Intel i7 Quad Core 3.06 GHZ processor
- 12 GIGs of RAM
- 1 TB 7200 RPM HD
- Zotac GeForce GT 430 1GB Silent video card (supports openGL)

I'll be writing a full review of this machine that will appear in the April edition, so all I can say right now is WOW! :eek:

After loading up my copy of Photosop CS4 (64 bit version), it's almost beyond words how much of an improvement there is. I actually enjoy editing my files!

I am more than impressed with the quality of product and service Puget Systems provides. If all you have ever purchased from is one of the "big names" you will be amazed at the difference.

Look for my in-depth review of my buying exprience from Puget Systems coming in April!

What monitor do you have it mated with?

Woo Hoo! Welcome to 2011! Isn't it stunning how fast PS runs on that rig? Mine is very similar only with a bunch more hard drives. PS opens in 4-6 seconds, ready to edit. I'm happy for you!

I tell ya, if you spent a final $89 on a second 1TB hard drive like the Western Digital Caviar Black and you put your Scratch Disks (and even your Page File) on that drive, it would run even better. Plus you could use the 2nd drive and an internal backup. Other than that, you've got it all Jim, that rig is even HD DSLR video capable!

Paul, though I don't have it set up as a scratch disk, I'm also using an iOmega 1TB external drive via the USB3 connection for back-up purposes.

Luke, I'm using a NEC MultiSync 2490WUXi2 monitor (24 inch, 1920 X 1200 resolution). It's a vast improvement over the 20 inch 1280 X 1024 I was using before!

Sounds great, Jim!

I've been poking around the Puget Systems site and I'm getting closer. These machines sound great to me.

Congratulations Jim - wish I could afford one right now. Looked at Puget Systems though the other day, and they look really impressive. I think I will definitely go with them when I upgrade.
