Hey folks,

If you're planning a trip to Moab and Canyonlands NP this spring there are a couple of things you might be interested to know.

First, Mineral Bottom Road re-opens on March 29, 2011!

Second, there's a new day use permit required for sections of Canyonlands. You can find more information about the permits on my blog.

Hope this information is helpful!

$*#)&!! I just cancelled my trip. I didn't have faith that they would get the road open. Oh well. Still have the permit if anyone wants it.

I may be interested in the permit Lance, what dates?

April 7, 8th & 9th.

Campgrounds are Airport, White Crack (great one) & one more I forget (it's between White Crack and airport). I called and changed the trip to an out and back when I thought the road was going to be out. Original site was Potato bottom on the 3rd night. I can call Monday and try and change it back if no one has taken it yet. Your's if you want it. Send me an email to lance.burch@gmail.com if you're interested.

White Crack is SICK! Views in both directions for sunrise and sunset. Caveat: count on wind.

Thanks to Lance I will be there, this is my first trip out there Bret; do you have any advice or great photography locations?

David: Airport Tower and the surrounding area are pretty cool, especially if there has been any recent rain as the potholes could be full of water. I also recommend the side trip down to Lathrop Canyon. You'll be right at the river and there are some nice views in both directions, although you'll find it difficult to photograph from river level. I suggest scrambling up a little higher wherever you can. Washer Woman Arch from below is nice. At White Crack, just walk around the rim and you'll find great stuff to photograph.

Have a good time!

Thanks Bret, do you guys recommend coming in from 313 or is the Potash route worth the extra time?

Also to note is that some of the White Rim Road is closed due to landslides, one section is not expected to be fixed until 2012. Also Fiery Furnace is already open in Arches.

Sitting in Monument Valley right now hoping for the clouds to clear!

David, where are those landslide closures?
I assume you are talking about locations other than the switchbacks to Mineral Bottom?

There are no closures other than Mineral Bottom. I checked w/ a buddy who is a ranger there and he confirmed that once Mineral Bottom opens, it will be possible to do the entire loop. Fiery Furnace is open year round. They may not do tours there in the winter but it is never closed.

David K: Depends on whether you're doing the whole loop or an out and back. I found the most interesting landscapes to be on the Potash side.
