Robert, it would help us to know which progarm you are using for image editing and preparing images for web display. For example, I could give the procedure I use in Photo Shop, but if you are using (say) Lightroom, my reply wouldn't help.

HI Preston
Ive been converting my images in lightroom then finsing of in cs5
1. After I have made all my adjustments to an image and save it, I create a duplicate and save it under a new file name.
2. Next, I flatten the image and delete any channels used for adjustments.
3. Resize the image to the size I want. I use either Bicubic or Bicubic Smoother, and check Resample Image, Scale Styles, and Constrain Proportions.
4. Convert the image profile to sRGB
5. Sharpen to taste using the method that works best for you
6. Save the file.
7. Now, go to File>Save for Web and Devices...
8. Choose jpeg as the output, check imbed profile and set the quality.
9. Save the file.
For NPN, the image should be sized to no larger than 720px on the long side. Also, the file size (in KB) should be less than or equal to 300KB. If your image is very detailed you may see some compression artifacts when you adjust the quality slideer to keep the file under the max size.
The above is a general procedure, so you'll have to experiment to find what works best for your images.
Maximum file size for images hosted by NPN is 300KB (500kb for optional larger file), sRGB JPEG files recommended. The 300/500KB limit does not apply for posts that link to images on other servers. However, bear in mind that larger files will take longer to load, particularly for those on dial-up connections.
Robert A. indicated that he finished up his processing in PS-CS5, so setting parameters and saving as JPEG in Lightroom before working in PS may compromise his workflow. If he did all his post processing in LR then your suggestion would be a good one.

200 KB, unless it's changed.
This from the NPN Posting Guidelines:
