Planning Puzzle
This forum is a great place to learn from one another as well as to celebrate our different perspectives. Next Thursday and Friday I will have two days free to spend photographing the beautiful Cornish Coast. We will be in the UK visiting my wife's family and they live right on the Cornish border. During our second week we will be up at a national park on the Welsh border.

Anyway, have a look at this map or look at this larger image. This is from Stephen Trainor's wonderful program. It shows what the light direction will be during these two days. What I would like you to do is to tell me where on the Cornish coast you would go based on these conditions and why. Feel free to use other sources, Google Maps, etc. Shooting on the ocean requires different lighting conditions than I would look for when shooting in the mountains so I look forward to hearing your answers and explanations. I don't think there is any one right answer.

Erik, have you posted this on the UKNP forum to get some input? Silly question but they might have some heads up info for you. Have a great trip and get some awesome shot like you did the last time.

Thanks Jack. I guess I was just curious how the rest of you plan such trips. If you are on the ocean, do you try to get the sun to set out at sea, do you like it to rise and set along the beach line or do you look for something else when you shoot the ocean. I figure we have enough folks here who have opinions about these things that it could be an interesting discussion. Then again, the thin air up here could be affecting my brain again.

I definitely would have to shoot sunrise as a "Pirate of Penzance!"

I shoot by weather conditions, except when the conditions don't turn out as planned, then i stay home and eat until im about to explode...
Seriously, go where you will feel most inspired--dont overthink it.

Spent time in the Cornwall area and also the Welsh countryside. My mothers people came from Cornwall and my Fathers from Wales. Can't comment on the light etc and I'm sure your wife's family can assist you in where and when. Both are beautiful areas and I wish I had the knowledge and equipment that I now have then. Have a great trip can't wait to see some of your images.

Eric,

I don't know if this will get to you in time, but I'd suggest St. Michael's Mount, just south of Marazion. My former wife's family is from Lyme Regis, and I recall that we drove around Cornwall about 20 years ago when we visited. But, my favorite memory of the whole trip was watching the sun set over St. Michael's Mount, on a clear day...

Enjoy,

Tim!
