I know, yet another macro lens question from me. Somebody beat me to the punch on a used Sigma 180mm macro last week at $500 so now I am looking at the Tamron for $140 more. I am not crazy about going over my preset $500 max but also want to get a macro lens before I head to TX to visit our daughter in the hopes of some wildflower shots and maybe a snake or two.
My intent is to shoot mostly flowers, insects and butterflies and this is my first foray into macro. I have also just acquired a Nikon D7000 and previously have a 1.4x sigma tele.
It`s a pity that you have maybe had to put a max budget of $500. IMHO I`d go for the Sigma 180mm new ($1099 @n Adorama) as with the 105mm & 150mm it is most definitely class defining glass from a 3rd party manufacturer. Making this comment from a ZUIKO Fanatic it has to tell you something about the quality of the specific Sigma lenses.
The problem that I have in buying a 2nd hand lens is why the person wants to sell it in the first place? Is there maybe something wrong with the lens? Was it dropped? Did it get wet? etc?
Also you owe it to yourself to get the best glass for your money and a lower price does not necessarily mean poor value but then it might just mean that.

I just picked up a new Sigma 150mm macro (they have a new version with image stabilization for much more $$, but I'm always on a triopod and don't need it) last fall for around $725 at B&H. The 150mm replaced the 180mm in Sigma's macro lineup. I've been very happy with this lens with no complaints. I don't have experience with the Tamron 180mm but it gets nice reviews. I agree with pp that you might find a way to up the budget a little and be happier in the long run. Best of luck. - Vince
