Hi from the Northwest. My wife and I are going to be through Chicago in late May and we were thinking of hitting Midewin. Is anyone familiar with the best birding spots there?
I'll be bringing the bird photography gear, and I'd appreciate any tips.
Dennis, I am from downstate never been there but it should be a good area. this is from midews living mag. Guided tours are held some Saturdays, May through September. On other days, pick up a free guide at the new Welcome Center and head outside; look for birds darting from cool woods to sunny prairie.
More than 100 bird species nest and breed at Midewin, and 68 more species use the habitat during migration or as winter range. The prairie is home to the largest concentration of Upland Sandpipers in the state and the largest population of Loggerhead Shrikes in northern Illinois.
Also to the West is the des plaines dolomite region along the river there are several other areas that look promining and it is the area where the Emerald headed dragonfly is found it is on the endangered list. Hope you have a great trip.

You say late May, because May 1 - 12 is the spring turkey hunting season. I have not been there, and it's just down the road. Shame, Bruce. Please report back and share your shots.
Have Fun.
Edit: Nearby is Starved Rock State Park, a true gem and loads of photo opportunities.
