I'm looking for a good heavy duty monopod that I can use for my Nikon D300 along with my Nikon 200-400mm lense. I want a good sturdy one for when I can't use my tripod. Can anyone send me in the right direction.

Hey Darryl a PRICE RANGE might help, lol!

If your budget is $218, you won't be disappointed with this Gitzo Series 2. Holds 26 lbs which means your rig will feel solid. There are mega monopods for $350 that hold 55 lbs, or for simple aluminum on a budget but still sturdy, this Manfrotto 679B for $45 holds up my 5D Mark II and 70-200mm/2.8 easily. I added a tilt/swivel head for another 35 bucks.

Another vote for the Manfrotto 680B. Works well as a walking stick, too.

Jim,

I don't use the Manfrotto products as the plastic bits don't seem to stand up to the cold weather. Am curious about your experiences.

Thanks for the help. It should give me some wear to start looking.
