Spent the last few days shooting grebes on a local lake in the hope I might get the 'courtship display' and although 4 pairs use the lake and I saw 3 displays - none were within range. So I had to settle for more straight forward images.
Canon 20D + 500f4 + x1.4 @ f6.3 iso 200 (cropped to verticle from horizontal)
A good portrait shot. Well caught pose with nice water colour and texture. No nits real except I would try rotating CW 2 degrees to get the water line and bird horizontal in the frame.
Glad to see you are making the most of the recent good weather. I have not managed much nature photography recently, busy with other things but hope to get out and about with the camera again in the next week or so.
Hi David
Very nice portrait,The red eye and plummage really stand out in the light,Good luck with the courting dance,I have the same prob lake geneva is a mile wide and too easy for the birds to get out of range,It will happen and am sure i will be envious with your typically excellent results
You seem to have the same luck as I do with Grebes, been trying for several years and never got the shot... still there is always next year
Nice image of the GCG, in a nice setting, and the details have been well held, have you done some cloning? just to the right of the beak, you seem to have a ghost of the beak there...

Hi Stewart & Phil
Yes I cloaned out the reflection of some light coloured vegitation and in doing so have picked up the ghost image of the bird's bill. I did not notice it at the time - careless of me. Thanks for pointing it out!
