I'll be making my way over to the Apostle Islands on Memorial Day weekend. Has anyone taken the Apostle Island cruise? I was wondering if you thought it worthwhile from a photography standpoint?
I'm also considering chartering a private boat for either 1/2 or 1 day (with a pro captain, not me) to take me around the islands. Would anyone have any suggestions on their favorite lighthouses or islands to visit?
Sorry for the slow response! I took the tour several years ago, but I can't quite remember all of the details. I do recall that the boat was a bit rough, in terms of waves, etc., and that we didn't really get all that close to the shoreline for great shots. If you have the time and funds, then yes, I'd encourage you to consider a private charter. Or, you might consider taking the tour and then figuring out what might work for you for a private charter. And, there's always the sea kayak option! ;)
But, you really have to be towards the outer islands to see anything (lighthouses, sandstone features) of significance. The lighthouses are on the outer islands to direct shipping away from them; if shipping were in the inner islands, they'd be screwed... I do recall Devil's Island having a pleasant lighthouse, but again, we didn't get too close.
Also, Little Sand Bay is a nice area to camp and relax, as well as have a view of Sand Island from the peninsula.
Good luck,
Tim!
