The weather is getting downright cozy in the deserts of the Colorado Plateau right about now
(save for some ferocious wind gusts!).
Spent Saturday along the Utah/Arizona border in a unique alcove carved by wind, water and time.
A few shots from that area follow--

'Encroachment'

I have newfound empathy for you sand dune photographers after getting almost literally sandblasted while attempting to take this shot.

'Counter Currents' (Redux)

A few slight tweaks done to this image per some good ideas in the 'Landscape' forum.

And I can hardly wait to return!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated! The best eyes in the West reside in this forum.

Nice series, John -- I like #2 and #3 in particular. Yeah, getting sandblasted is not fun and especially not fun to clean up the gear after.

Thanks, Paul.
'Cross Currents' looks a bit flat there. How about an encore?

I like Encroacment and CrossCurrents Redux, although if I scroll by redux it makes me a little dizzy
Posted by Bill Pelzmann on March 21, 2011 at 8:30 PM
I love sandstone abstracts. This is a wonderful set.
"Redux" is may favorite. It gives my eyeballs a real workout.

My only nit is that some of your highlights appear a bit bright. That may just be my monitor.

Wow, incredible series! You're on a roll! "Counter Currents" is the ONE... but they're all really really nice! Encroachment is great too...

Three words: sandstone acid trip

I'll be peaking any minute now...

Spectacular series John! I'm goin with Jack on my faves, and "Cross Currents" encore is much improved. I think I could spend an entire day in this spot and not exhaust the compositional possibilities. Great work!

All are excellent portrayals of this area. I like the second to last one. I have seen similar images as the last one so I am going with the second to last one.... I will be in this area shortly. Will have to copy all of these!!!! :jump: :jump: :jump:

And I thought it was going to be about bad fast food.......

Good stuff. Looks like a neat location

John, they're all very good, but Reactor and Counter Currents are my favorites. Have you thought about B&W conversions for any of these? Just to see what they'd look ilike?
Posted by Jared Atencio on March 22, 2011 at 7:17 AM
I think my keyboard just shorted out from the drool I just spilled all over the keys..."Reactor" does it for me-those 'braided" lines in the LRC are just awesome-but the other images are not far behind. I love the abstract direction you've taken in your recent outings and feel these really round out your portfolio of the plateau (as if it needed rounding). Nothing quite compares to the painful exfoliation of a good sandblasting, but I think the rewards were def worth the sacrifice here. Nice work!

John, this is some astonishing work!!! I won't attempt to pick a favorite. I do agree with Bill P about highlights being a bit hot, especially in Reactor, but I also feel like I'm being picky because these are so damn good. :toast:

Like all of them, but my favorite is Reactor, it looks like an explosion of light! What a great series!

These all leave me speechless! :toast:

Wow! What a fun series - reactor and counter currents just exploded off of my display! :toast:

John, this whole series is freakin awesome! I love abstract work to begin with, so these really hit home with me. My favs are Reactor and Counter Currents (Redux), but I also really like the re-post on Cross Currents as well! Great work!!! :toast:

Hi John - these are stunning and all are so interesting in different ways. I really like Reactor and Cross Currents, with Reactor being my favorite by a hair.

Wow! Great series John. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be 'Counter Currents'. Excellent work.

John,

Dude you know what I like about all of these images is I have no sense of scale - an absolute wonderment among photography - makes you think think think.... and you've done it, Bravo!
