Sigma 180 Macro, do I need the DG?

Hi all.

I have been thinking about the Sigma 180 macro. If I get a used one, can I get the non DG version, or do I need the DG version? I have heard that there are issues with the Nikon D200? I shoot a D70 for now, but will likely upgrade somewhere down the road.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Nathan,
I have the non-DG version, and it is great
I don't know about the issues with the D200.

The only difference between the DG and non-DG are the lens coatings. The DG coatings are supposed to help prevent flare with digital cameras due to the reflective nature of the CCD. I have the pre-DG 150mm macro and I have had excellent results with it. If you don't shoot into the sun I doubt there is any difference.

The issue with the D200 is some focus button on the back of the camera that can be used to focus the lens instead of depressing the shutter button half way. The Sigma HSM focus system won't work with the button on the back of the D200 but works fine with the shutter button. Sigma will upgrade the lens, if you want, for free.

I have the non-DG as well. Absolutely no complaints...it is the only macro lens I own.
