Hey gang, after getting one of my external hard drives back from a less-than-impressive tech in Pueblo (he had it for almost three months, did little to nothing with it), I contacted a company that offers discounts to NAPP members about trying to rescue the raw files on it. They seem like an impressive operation, but their price sounds pretty prohibitive. Their slowest turnaround (time is NOT of the essence) is priced from $700 - $2,700, with their final price determination based on how much recoverable data there is. Luckily, I would know that before they did the work, as they do a free diagnostics work-up.
Given that the price is higher than I think I'm willing to spend (we all know it's gonna be closer to the high end than the low end, and even a 15% discount would leave me with a huge price to pay), anybody got suggestions for Colorado-based techs who might be able to take a look at my drive?

E-mail me your phone number and a good time to call. I have several questions before I can make a recommendation.

Todd,
There are software utilities that can recover information from hard drives. If the drive will still spin, you can download programs that will recover the data. Several of these offer free trials and will show you what can be recovered. They run around $100.00 to $200.00. Might be worth the time to try one. Just search on data recovery software.
Todd,
Tallyns in the midwest is the name I hear most often from professional photographers in the portrait world...they have been around many years and have an excellent reputation with data recovery....they are not cheap, but they do guarantee that they recover the data or you dont pay. Joe Rogers

Todd, I will start with this.... GET AN ONLINE BACKUP SOLUTION! I personally use backblaze http://www.backblaze.com. It costs me $5 / month and is secure and unlimited. Now that that ti-raid is over, $700-2700 is a pretty normal price. Depending on the symptoms you trying to recover it yourself could cause more damage and cost. Most of these recover places take your drives into a clean room, remove the platters, hook them up to a new hard drive casing and then recover all data they can. It is expensive to run an operation like this. Jack Garret may have a good contact. He works about 3 doors down from a very reputable drive recovery center.
