Can you folks give me an ideas for what filters I will need for some good waterfalls shots on my upcoming trip? I'm thinking 2 or 3 stop soft grads and 2 or 3 stop sold ND's and my polarizer as well.

Also planning on 2 and 3 stop soft grads for the beach shots. Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Waterfall/river: All I ever use is a polarizer. But I am shooting early, late or overcast days so longer exposures aren't a problem.

Ocean/lake: Soft GND if needed and a CP sometimes depending on how much reflection I want.

I shoot a lot of waterfalls and I use just a polarizer, but like Douglas I'm only shooting in the softer light. I have been thinking of picking up a variable ND in the near future. I don't think you can ever go wrong with Singh Ray products but they are pricey. There's a couple other companies that makes less expensive Variable ND's, Genus and LightCraft. They've had OK reviews from a value standpoint. Singh Ray also makes a Vari-ND and Polarizer combined into one filter. But it's a thick sucker and not recommended for wide angle shots. Good luck, waterfalls are my favorite subjects. :toast:

I think you've got it covered with the filters you list in your first post, Jack.

Great question Jack. I've been thinking along these lines as well. I really need to pick up a polarizer. I'd also like a couple of ND to be able to get the right texture of water in brighter light. Did you make a decision yet?
