I had to get a new video card, the one I got recommends a 400 W powersupply. My system only has a 350W supply. I don't run games or anything, so my applications are not graphics intensive. Can I get away with a slightly undersized power supply?

Without knowing what the full load power consumption of your machine is, it will be hard to tell. However, If, with the new card, you're above or near the output of your power supply, you run the risk of causing damage to other components and/or overheating the supply. Overheating the power supply is a fire hazard.

Decent power supplies are not that expensive and are easy to change out. If you're not comfortable with DIY, a tech could do it in an hour or less.

Thanks Preston. I'm going to go ahead and get higher wattage PS - for under $100 it seems like the prudent option.
