I am pondering getting up and hiking up to Dream Lake for sunrise tomorrow. Would I need snowshoes or will the trail be packed down enough to go without? Has anyone been up there lately? Thanks in advance for any info.
I havent been up there, but id be willing to bet that the trail will be very packed down. If youre sticking to the well-trodden path, no need for snowshoes, but personally id bring them anyways cause that gives you the option to go off the path. Should be reasonably calm tomorrow, have fun! I briefly considered Dream for tomorrow, I think sunset is the better option for tomorrow, so I will be headed west.
I was up there last weekend. The trail was hard packed and I went up after a snowfall the previous night. I took no snowshoes or trax, just boots. Of course, this was my first time up that trail (predawn) and I lost the trail at Nymph lake since I wasn't familiar with where it went around the lake. So I only made it that far and shot sunrise (which didn't really pan out) from there. So I don't know the trail conditions past that.
Trax are advisable as there were a few off camber areas where things had drifted. Snowshoes for the off trail areas is advisable too.
