I have been awaiting reviews of this lens and more about it. I currently use either a Nikon 400mm f/2.8 with the older 2xTC all on a Gitzo carbon-fiber tripod with Wimberley head; or my tried and true Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 with 1.7x TC.
The latter is my stand by as the former at 17# with a Nikon D-300 is just awarkward to tote around much.
I am curious as to other photographers' thoughts about the new Sigma lens, insofar as how it's (unstabilized)predecessor performed with regards to handling, weight, use for shooting by hand etc.
I used the older version and liked it. Image quality was good, nothing like your 400 2.8 though. The new version should be better. I can't imagine shooting it hand held, its too heavy for me to hold steady, even with the os.
