I spent a few days in Nebraska recently with a fellow photographer and despite high winds and iffy weather managed to get a few decent shots of Greater Prairie Chickens booming. I cropped this tight and darkened the edges a bit to emphasize his tough expression.

"Decent"? I think this is excellent! I've never seen a closeup of this bird, and I find it fascinating. Good job burning those edges.
How did you get so close?

He seems like he was almost in the blind with you. Nice head angle and look in the eyes. Looks like you did a good job keeping/bringing out the color and detail on the shaded side near his left eye.
I was able to get a close shot by using a blind and a 500mm. My friend and I set up blinds before dawn and waited for the birds. They were all around us. They stayed about 90 minutes or so and then flew off as a group.
