I looked through the forums but didn't find an answer to this question. If someone posts a message to you, or a critique or compliment, should you respond with a post in response to the post, or send an email, or nothing??
Thanks

Hi Tina - posting a response like 'thanks for commenting', or 'thanks for the kind words', is not expected (and truthfully, it can clutter the critiques with unnecessary comments). If you want to express your thanks, best is to do so by reciprocating with your own (honest) comments on their work!

If someone poses a question, it's certainly polite to answer (in the forum is fine, or email if it seems more appropriate). In the case of a very in depth critique or idea, folks will sometimes post a reply (as thanks, or explaining why you did what you did for example, or asking for further clarification), or repost the image with the critiques taken into account.

Tina,

I can only add on to Floris' very good answer. You certainly can answer or respond to questions or requests in your own thread/post - that's perfectly acceptable. If you want to thank someone personally for an exceptional comment, feel free to send them a personal note through the email link. And as Floris eludes, don't feel obligated to reply or say thank you for every comment, but it's certainly fine to interact with those posting comments and asking questions. One thing to remember though, is much of the time after folks leave a comment, they don't return to the same post, so don't be surprised when no one comes back and says "you're welcome.".....

A very good question btw, thanks for asking.

One other thing to clarify - Lon alluded to this - if we say "thanks" or whatever to someone IN our own post, the addressee does not get the message directly. Our forums are set up so that only the person who starts the thread gets forwarded any reply in that thread. . Other online groups are sometimes set up to send all replies to everyone who takes part in that thread.

If you want to be sure a person sees your reply, send it to them directly by the email link below their post. Or, as I sometimes do, reply IN the thread, then copy and also send it through the email link.

Good subject. If I post a shot and it gets kind replies, I feel like I should answer in the post so it doesn't appear that I'm being ungrateful to other visitors who read the post afterwards ("he gets all these positive comments and doesn't even thank anyone"). I know, I know, this isn't BP.com, lol. BUT, I would rather respond directly, I think that's more proper, so if you guys are telling me that it's OK to not post several "thanks for the kind words" type of replies, then I won't! I'll go the direct route, sounds good to me.

Thanks for clarifying th.... no, wait, forget I said that.

When I post an image for critique, I will answer specific questions raised in comments as soon as I can. I also make a strong attempt to thank those who have commented, but I do this when the image is about two-thirds of the way down the first page.

Paul,

I'm not saying not to post a thank you, not at all. But I am suggesting that responding to every single comment (and it happens rarely here, so I really don't think it's an issue - I was providing an example for Tina who possibly is new to the forum) clutters up the responses somewhat as Floris originally suggested.

For me it's all about common sense and courtesy. Yes, we should thank people and be engaged in our threads. It's also relative to the number of comments posted. For an image that gets 30 comments, I certainly don't want to read 30 courteous thank you's.... Hope that makes sense. Not here to discourage, but just offer a common sense approach.

Roger Wilco! I'll toss one in at the bottom of the heap. First I need to create an image that would actually GET that much response, lol.

BTW Lon, I'm in the midst of a nasty flu, sometimes getting dizzy and then things don't even seem real, I probably shouldn't be posting replies. I'll probably look back at this thread in a few days and go "what did I write THAT for?" But then again, folks on here know I'm weird anyway.
