Went shooting today for the first real time with my new D90, in RAW much of the time. So now I go to open them in Elements 7, they are showing as .NEF files. I know it stands for "Nikon something something", but PSE will not allow me to open them as a group or individually, saying "they are the wrong type of file". I'm sure there is an easy answer somewhere--I mean I hope there is--but I thought while I was looking it up, I'd post here for help too. Thank you in advance!!!!

First, congrats on the new camera! Glad to see you're oout having fun with it.

Guessing here a little, but you may need to update your PSE7 so that it can open the D90 files. Check your version with Adobe to make sure it supports the D90.

NEF is the standard Nikon Raw File - I think it stands for Nikon Electronic Format, but could be wrong.

Hi Bill! I had that problem with PSE in the past. You need to upgrade Adobe Camera Raw for PSE7. The file is here:

Steve's right, ACR for PE gets updated as new models come out, and they're pretty good about keeping up to date. Funny, ACR for the real Photoshop is a different story, Adobe doesn't go back too far in versions which is a bit quirky. For instance, if you buy a 5D Mark II, you have to use Photoshop CS4 or later because ACR for CS3 and earlier doesn't support the camera. Yet ACR even in older PE6 does, go figure!

BTW, here's a clickable link to your update.

That's true Paul, but PSE has the same issue too. When I bought my D7000 I found PSE8 wasn't supported for ACR 6.3. I had to upgrade to either PSE9 or CS5. I was getting frustrated with PSE's limitations so I bit the bullet.

It sure is nutty trying to keep up, isn't it? I confess, after biting the initial bullet in 2008 and getting the Production Premium CS4 suite, I upgrade as soon as new versons come out... guess I'm a total fanboy. But Photoshop CS5 has so many improvements it's arguably the best upgrade they've done (Content-Aware Fill and Refined Edge that selects HAIR for pete's sake!), so last year's update was a no-brainer. I have to wonder what CS6 will bring, it may be the first version I skip because Adobe just released the CS5.5 upgrade which affects Premiere and After Effects (which I do use and did pre-order). I'm just thinking that CS7 will be the target after this, if CS6 ends up being like CS3, just a decent-but-not-worth-it upgrade. You know, like the Canon 30D and the iPad 2. Hmmmm, that last sentence should stir the bee's nest a little, lol!

Sorry Bill, this is your thread, I realize I went off on a tangent! I'd delete it but it's already in your inbox... I think I need to just get back to work, too much sugar in my coffee probably. Yes, I ruin my coffee with sugar.

LOL, Paul, you have the thread-starter's permission to keep going... and going... and going...! You're already over my head, but I'm sure others will enjoy it. (Me too, but I have to use the fake stuff, Splenda.)

Again, I appreciate the help.
