I am looking for some advice on mat cutters. It looks like the Logan 450 will fit my needs. If anyone knows of a comparable cutter I'd love to hear about it.
Also, if you have had experience cutting 8 ply mats, is it that much more difficult than 4 ply? I have read in numerous places of the difficulties in cutting 8 ply.
I use the older Logan 401 and have absolutely no complaints. Cutting 8-ply mats takes a little more force and more frequent blade changes but I've had no problem using either the Logan straight or bevel cutters with them.

8 ply mats are harder to cut, since it is twice as thick and will dull your blades faster, which means you need to change them more often to keep from tearing the mat. I regularly use 6ply mats as a compromise between the cost of 4 ply and the look of 8 ply.
I also use an very old tabletop 40" C+H mat cutter with production stops. It's probably 30 years old but works great. It is missing a few little features some of the new ones have, but I would have to think the new version of it would be $1000+, I got it from a frame shop that upgraded for about $150. I was later offered one for free from my local framing molding supplier. They sell newer mat cutters and are sometimes given the old ones.
Production stops are great if you are cutting multiples of the same size mat.
