My cable release just broke. It plug actually fell apart. I need a new one and would like to know if anyone has found a better remote cable release for the Nikon D3x than the Nikon MC-30.

I've been using the mc-30 on 99.5% of all images I've taken over the last 6 years (since I bought the D2x). Never had an issue with it. I know they have some cheaper generic ones on ebay, but I don't know anything about those. I imagine B&H may have some generic ones as well.
I've had no problems with my MC-30 and I've used it often for years. I've certainly gotten my $49 value out of it.
Nothing lasts forever. I'd simply buy another one, or maybe find a good used one on EBay.

Maybe I got a bad one, but so did a fellow photographer. Both of us have had the wiring strip from its casing. I guess I will just have to deal with it. I really need to replace mine.
I used to keep my MC-30 cable attached to the camera at all times, simply because it is such a pain to put back on once it's off (especially with cold hands). Eventually, the cable broke at the connection to the camera. I tried going cheap and bought a Promaster cable. It worked for about a day. I then went through two to three other Promaster cables, including wireless releases. They worked for a few days at best. Finally, I got a new MC-30, but I take it off the camera before is goes back in the bag/backpack. Its worked perfectly ever since and I will never get anything else again.
Thanks, Rudy. I take mine off every time, but it still broke at the connection. I just got 2 more so I have a back-up. I love my Nikon, but there are definitely things about Canon I like better and this is one of them.
Hmmm...for Nikon users. I have never had a problem with ANY Nikon cable on multiple Nikons. They always work. Just how do you break a cable? I do use extreme care with my equipment. Interesting that 3rd party stuff seems to break all on their own. I just don't see how this is possible if you use care for your equipment. When I need a cable, I attach it and use it carefully. When that duration is over, I remove it and carefully put it back into whatever I am using to store it. I am pretty anal about this. Maybe this is why they always work for me. Not meaning to say the posters are not being careful...I am sure they actually are having a problem. I use cables for remote firing of the camera and for firing external flashes. Some are third party...works everytime.
In fact, (I forget the product number), I use the old film camera Nikon remote cable on my D700 WITHOUT the battery even being in the unit, (was for the F5 and earlier and D200ish) and it works just fine!
